Duke Energy PowerPair  Progam Approved!

The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) has officially approved Duke Energy’s new incentive program for new solar systems with battery storage. The name of the program is PowerPair sm and Sundance Power Systems is proud to have been part of the development group for this unique effort to assess how battery storage can help North Carolinians manage power in our state.

Customers may initially apply for the rebate during a four-week application period from May 10th to June 8th, 2024. (Note: original dates were May 8 and June 5)

Save Up to $9,000!

Homeowners who are Duke Energy customers  are eligible for an incentive of up to $3,600 for solar and $5,400 for batteries (a total of $9,000) when installed together!
Here are the details:
  • Applicant must be a Duke North Carolina customer (Duke Energy Carolinas or Duke Energy Progress, which serves the greater Asheville area) and applicants must own the premise.
  • The Duke PowerPair incentive is only for NEW solar projects that include battery storage.
  • Th new solar system must be operational within 270 days after receiving a reservation.
  • The system installer must be registered as a “Trade Ally” with Duke Energy to participate in the Program. (Sundance Power Systems is registered, of course!)

PowerPair Details

Two Categories to be Filled Equally

Duke Energy is creating two pathways you can take with this program. Here are the details for each ‘cohort’:

Residential Solar Choice Rider (PowerPair) customers will receive:
      • Solar incentive: $0.36/ Watt AC up to 10 kilowatt (kW). This incentive is has a maximum value of  $3,600.
      • Battery incentive: $400/kWh up to 13.5kWh. This incentive has a maximum value of $5,400.
        • Residential Solar Choice Rider customers must adhere to “time-of-use” rates. Customer retains complete control of the energy storage device, aka battery. Customer will receive the upfront solar and battery storage incentive payment as an incentive but will not receive the “battery control” incentive.
Net Metering Bridge Rider (PowerPair+ EnergyWise Home/ Power Manager Battery Control customers will receive:
      • Solar incentive: $0.36/ Watt AC up to 10 kilowatt (kW). This incentive is has a maximum value of  $3,600.
      • Battery incentive: $400/kWh up to 13.5kWh. This incentive has a maximum value of $5,400.
      • Customers shall receive the Bridge Rate and not be required to use time-of-use rates
        • These customers must allow up to 36 ‘events’ annually where Duke Energy shall draw up to 80% of battery stored capacity. These customers will receive $6.50/kW/month. The net battery control incentive system owner receives is $4.61/kW/month.

More information from the Duke Energy website:

  • Duke Energy will be allowed to remotely call a “control event” 18 times per winter season (Dec- Mar); up to 9 times per summer season (May- Sept); and up to 9 times in remaining months. The annual limit of times that Duke Energy can access your battery is 36.
  • A ‘Control Event’ will send a signal to the battery and discharge it within 48 hours.
  • Duke Energy will not discharge below a 20% state of charge in the battery
  • Duke Energy also reserves the right for interruption outside of these parameters in the event continuity of service is threatened.
